Celebrating 35 Years of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

Why Now?

This July marks the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) – a civil rights law that protects people with disabilities from discrimination and supports full access to work, school, transportation, and community life. While honoring this milestone year, we know our rights are under threat. People with disabilities are under great stress as key laws that brought progress are being attacked. It is with urgency that we ask you to share your message and story to be part of the push for progress!

Your Letter, Your Story

We’re asking people with disabilities to write letters to your federal and state lawmakers.

These letters can be:

Handwritten and mailed
Typed and emailed using our "take action" form
Shared virtually with a photo of you living your best life and what’s important to you! (public transportation, healthcare, access to buildings, schools, supports, employment, and accommodations.)
- You can do this by sending your own separate email or tagging your lawmaker on social media.

I live in South Carolina. I’m writing to you as a proud American and supporter of people with disabilities. This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Because of the ADA, I’ve been able to access my community, pursue education, and work toward independence. But despite this progress, people with disabilities still face major barriers to health care, housing, employment, and our pursuit of happiness. We need national leadership that honors the promise of the ADA. Please protect funding and policies that support independence, access, and opportunity. That includes expanding accessible transportation, affordable housing, long-term services and supports, and ensuring that access to government services, programs, buildings, projects, and places is created with accessibility for people with disabilities in mind. With 1 in every 4 Americans being a person with a disability, it is key to our liberty and freedom that people with disabilities are included and a key part of policy development, planning, and implementation. Please help ensure the ADA continues to fulfill its promise for all Americans.

Hello, I am a local constituent. As a proud South Carolinian and community member who supports the disability community, I’m taking time to honor the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. This July marks 35 years since the ADA became law. Due to this landmark civil rights law, our valued disability community has had improved access to work, education, and everyday life. But those gains are fragile. Today, key protections are under threat, and barriers still block many of us from fully participating in society. I urge you to support legislation that protects the ADA and strengthens access, promotes self-sufficiency, and protects our rights. US legislation can improve the lives of people in SC by: Improving employer relationships with disability by following Employment First practices and ending subminimum wage across the nation, just like we did in our state! Ensuring funding goes to increasing access to public, accessible transportation, especially in rural communities found throughout our state. Improving access to affordable housing that is accessible to all by incentivizing Universal Design to meet the needs of the disabled community while creating homes that everyone can enjoy. Ensuring access to healthcare that makes work possible for many by ensuring that Medicaid and affordable options are available to all who need them. Not just services that help us survive, but adding strong investments in home and community-based services that let us live and work where we choose. Upholding Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the ADA, while listening to and engaging with disabled people when making plans and policies or updating regulations. The ADA was a starting point, not the finish line. I know you care for the 1 in 3 people in SC with a disability and the 1 in 5 people who are aging in our state. Let’s show it through good policy and action. Please keep disability rights a priority in your leadership.

The ADA opened doors for people with disabilities across our state—making it possible for more South Carolinians to attend school, seek employment, and live independent, self-directed lives. But many barriers remain. Far too often, our neighbors still face inaccessibility in public spaces, housing, transportation, and critical support systems. These gaps prevent thousands of South Carolinians with disabilities from participating fully in our communities. As a leader in South Carolina, I’m asking for your leadership in building a more inclusive and accessible South Carolina. We can become a national model by committing to policies and investments that: Strengthen employment opportunities by advancing the goals of South Carolina’s 2022 Employment First Initiative Act and finally selecting the members of the Employment First Commission Expand access to public, accessible transportation—especially in rural areas Increase the availability of affordable, universally designed housing Protect and strengthen Medicaid and other healthcare options, including home and community-based services that empower independence Enforce the ADA and Section 504 by ensuring our public services, buildings, and programs are fully accessible—with input from the disability community The ADA was a beginning, not a finish line. One in three South Carolinians has a disability, and one in five is aging. Let’s show we value all residents by advancing policies that affirm dignity, access, and opportunity.
